At The Gates: At war with realityAtTheGatesAtWarWithReality

Habakuk: Gotta admit I’m not a huge fan of theirs but this is pretty good. 7

CadenZ: More sinister yet not as catchy as “Slaughter of the Soul”, “AWWR” surprises with being AtG’s next best album. I’m glad they’re back. 8

Cobal Caldera: What’s even better than being one of the most respected Swedish death metal bands? Being one of the most respected Swedish death metal bands and able to put out an album that meets the expectations of fans almost two decades later. Of course. 9

sincan: I didn’t know what to expect from these old bastards, but the result was pretty damn fine. 8

sly: At war with banality. 5

Obituary: Inked in bloodObituaryInkedInBlood

Habakuk: It’s still retarded, but I still kinda like it. 7

CadenZ: Zombies ate Obituary’s brains 25 years ago, what’s left is some residual neurosignals that still make them play the same song over and over and over… 6

Cobal Caldera: While the first single may be deceiving, Obituary deliver their unique sound once more: mid-paced primitive death metal with great hooks, and Mr Tardy’s trademark screams. Awesome cover and nice -kinda- modern strokes here and here work for giving “Inked in Blood” that extra something to make it purchase-worthy. I like this shit. Duh. 8

sincan: Oldened music of death. I guess they recorded the guitars through a wall of pillows. 6

sly: Of the old school bands in this month’s AA, Obituary crushes them all. They haven’t evolved but this sounds fresh compared to most of the shit I’ve heard this month. The track “Deny You” slays! 8

Anaal Nathrakh: DesideratumAnaalNathrakh-Desideratum

Habakuk: The only thing negative I have to say is that they can’t positively surprise anymore. 9

CadenZ: Making uncompromise into an art form since 1998. 8

Cobal Caldera: I’ve just learnt that Mick Kenney writes songs for some shitty metalcore act. I knew something not quite good was going on. 5

sincan: This album is tricky, at its best moments its pretty good, but sometimes it is just very pathetic since many tracks just consists of over triggered base drums along with a constant wall of sound and synthetic synth effects of life. 7

sly: Clumsy, stupid industrial black metal. 4

Revocation: Deathlessrevocation-deathless

Habakuk: Could use a little more old Entombed. 6

CadenZ: Groovy melodic death with Marty Friedman-like solos and modern breakdowns. Reminds me of Dååth. Pretty good stuff, especially if you like great musicianship. 7

Cobal Caldera: This is a good month for metal: Even Revocation, whose previous works were pretty useless to me, managed to release something that makes sense. Way to go, gringos. 7

sincan: You can hear that at least one guy in this band is short haired. Thus someone is not short haired and at least everything isn’t full of semen. 6

sly: There are better technical death metal bands out there. Pass on these guys. You’ll thank me. 4

Orange Goblin: Back from the abyssOrange-Goblin-Back-From-The-Abyss

Habakuk: The Goblins’ heaviness offensive continues to the point where they sound a bit like Motörhead at times. Why not? 8

CadenZ: Lemmy does Black Sabbath stoner, rather blandly, despite the occasional swagger. 5

sincan: This album was a bit too boring for being a stoner doom something metal one. Some good riffs, here and there, but nothing more. 5

sly: Average stoner music from an average band that just doesn’t rock. And man, they’ve been trying so hard all these years. 5

Exodus: Blood in blood outExodusBloodInBloodOut

Habakuk: Decent, overly long songs. Yep, still new Exodus. 6

CadenZ: Thrash thrashy thrash-thrash. 5

Cobal Caldera: You know your thrash is good when it arises punching/slamming/fisting urges. 7

sincan: Oldened fart thrash metal with a little dog on vocals? 5

sly: Fine thrash ruined by Zetro’s duckfarting vocals. 4

Sanctuary: The year the sun diedsanctuary-the-year-the-sun-died

Habakuk: Queensryche on valium. 5

CadenZ: I’ve never understood the praise Nevermore gets, and the same goes for this. A heavier, darker Judas Priest without the songwriting skills. 4

Cobal Caldera: This is nothing but the new Nevermore record. Me likes Nevermore. 8

sincan: Hmmm, nice guy semi harsh metal? one of those “don’t you hear how good they play their instruments and stuff”-bands. 4

sly: Not the Sanctuary I remember. More like a Nevermore album and not a great one at that. 4

Einherjer: Av oss, for ossEinherjer-Av-Oss-For-Oss

Habakuk: “Av oss, for oss.” FUBU for Vikings?? GTFO, Gentlemen. 4

CadenZ: Einherjer put the dork in folk. 4

Cobal Caldera: If Abbath played in a pagan metal band… They’d sound better than this. Not the worst I’ve heard, though. 5

sincan: This album has epic folk inspired black metal riffs here and there which actually makes this one pretty good. 7

sly: Dull, pasty white viking metal for sofa warriors. 4

Mysticum: Planet Satanmysticum-planet-satan

Habakuk: Flick the switch!! The drum computer has gone haywire! 2

CadenZ: As cold and hostile as ever, albeit with less epic songs. 6

Cobal Caldera: Refer to my comment on Godflesh. 4

sincan: Pretty generic and plastic black metal. 5

sly: It took 18 years to release this album. Mysticum haven’t changed much and that’s a good thing. 7

Vesania: Deus ex machinavesania-deus-ex-machina

Habakuk: This is like Anaal Nathrakh without all the great things. 5

CadenZ: Lackluster in production and songwriting, decent execution. 5

Cobal Caldera: Decent to good with nearly zero replay value. 5

sincan: How many version of this band exists? Nothing new, move along. 5

sly: Man, their band picture on Metal-Archives is hilarious. Their music, on the other hand, isn’t. Pretty bad black metal symphonic metal, if you catch my drift. 4

Devin Townsend Project: Z²devin-townsend-project-z2

Habakuk: Have never understood this shit, and never will. 3

CadenZ: Pretty uneven in quality; but the worst moments still being mediocre and the highlights amazing, Devin pulls off another good album. 7

Cobal Caldera: Hysterical is hysterical. FX is FX. You get the point. 7

sincan: I don’t know the story about this album but, it’s a bit too long and, not for me. 5

sly: Another turd to add to Townsend’s heap of shit. 1

Scar Symmetry: The singularity (Phase I – neohumanity)scar-symmetry-the-singularity-phase-1

Habakuk: They’re aging better than In Flames, that’s for sure. That doesn’t mean much though. 5

CadenZ: The solos alone get a fucken 100 points. I also love the Toto/AOR/melodic prog shit, and the right on brutal death metal stuff. Too bad there are so many stupid breakdowns, ’cause they ruin so much. Without them this would’ve been one my favorites of the year, now it’s merely good. 7

Cobal Caldera: Interesting. At moments. Some moments. They should probably go instrumental. 6

sincan: Actually not that interesting, nope. Oh, and it’s dad-ened death metal. 5

sly: I can’t stand music like this. I’d gladly smoke shitty brown Arizona pot and drink a 40 of Mickey’s to Orange Goblin than have to hear these guys again. 0

Slipknot: .5: The Gray chapterslipknot-5-the-gray-chapter

Habakuk: A-D-D! A-D-D! A-D-D! A-D-D! A-D-D! 4

CadenZ: Too much of Stone Sour’s emo shit has seeped in, and most of the harsher moments sound like re-hashed versions of past virtues. Clearly their weakest effort. 5

Cobal Caldera: I’m not a fan of these people. Never was, never will. This is real solid shit, though. 6

sincan: So it feel like Slipknot has (tried) to drop the mega pop thing and aiming for those darker and dirtier years, but they just feel tired and old. But still better than their romantic period. 5

sly: I guess this one will make many douchebags happy. 3

Godflesh: A world lit only by firegodflesh-a-world-lit-only-by-fire

Habakuk: I absolutely dig the style and appreciate the legendary status, but the pace is a little slow. 6

CadenZ: No boner for you! Or maybe half a. 5

Cobal Caldera: Errr… No. 4

sincan: It can also be lit by high temperature or if you get enough electrons to excitate and fall back again around the globe. 4

sly: Godflesh’s heyday was long ago. Let’s leave it at that. 3

Evergrey: Hymns for the brokenevergrey-hymns-for-the-broken

Habakuk: We all know what his rhymes to by now. 3

CadenZ: This must be the most emo album since HIM’s latest. 4

sincan: Mature well produced metal for people who have cut their hair and stopped listening to death metal, but still wants to be in the “game”. 6

sly: Baton Rouge + Heavenwood² x Him = Evergrey 0
